            The output level of the comb generator is relatively high, and the frequency is well beyond 18GHz. The limit for the N connector is 18GHz, so this limit also applies to the generator, albeit with a wider spectrum. VCTCXO is used as frequency standard. This acronym stands for "Voltage Controlled Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator".

           The compensation circuit can make the crystal have good frequency stability. In addition, the nominal frequency can be tuned within a narrow range using the tuning voltage. This makes it possible to compensate small frequency differences between comb generator and receiver. In the open test site, the collision with the environmental signal can be avoided by fine-tuning the frequency.

           The unit is turned on by the pilot style power switch. Push the switch to the top. A green LED "on" indicates that the battery is charging properly. A red LED "Low Battery" means the battery is almost dead. If the LED dims even when the generator is on, the rechargeable battery is disconnected due to low voltage. After charging, the generator will be ready to run. Turn the control button "-∆F+" on the right side of the front panel so that the white line on the knob points to "100 MHz". The comb generator can now be measured and can be connected, for example, to an antenna.

           Use the frequency trim control "-∆F+" to move the reference frequency within a narrow range. The red LED lights up when the trim is active to avoid unintentional frequency shifts that could lead to erroneous measurements. The fixed position "100 MHz" is the standard position (LED dark). Intentional frequency tuning can be used to compensate for frequency differences between the SG 9302 C and the receiver. However, it must be taken into account that, in contrast to a comb generator, a receiver or spectrum analyzer does not have a simple relationship between the reference frequency and the received frequency. Perfect tracking on one frequency can cause severe drift elsewhere. Frequency tuning may also help to avoid conflicts with interfering signals, such as in open area test sites.
