The Van Der Hoofden test head determines human exposure to electromagnetic fields caused by luminance in the frequency range from 20 kHz to 10 MHz. measurements are based on IEC 62493 version 2.0: 2015-03. the extent to which a person is exposed to an electromagnetic field can be derived from the different coupling methods between the luminaire and the person. Part of the exposure is based on the capacitive coupling between the luminaire and the person. This creates an induced internal electric field, which must be evaluated using an EMI receiver and a Van Der Hoofden test head.

The VDH 30 consists of a conductive sphere with a diameter of 210 mm, a connecting wire with a length of 300 mm, the protective network of the EMI receiver and a wooden tripod.

The EMI receiver measures the voltage between 50 Ω. It must be connected to the N connector of the protection network. In order to determine whether the luminaire complies with the standard, the measured voltage must be converted into an induced internal electric field, caused by the external electric field in the frequency range of 20 kHz to 10 MHz weighted and aggregated induced internal electric field compliance factor F should not exceed the value of 1. If F does not exceed 1, then the DUT is compliant. These calculations can be performed using the software provided with the device.
