What is the meaning of electromagnetic compatibility?

Although the problem of electromagnetic interference has a long history, the emerging comprehensive subject of electromagnetic compatibility was formed in modern times. The main research and application contents include: electromagnetic compatibility standards and norms; analysis and prediction; design; experimental measurement; development of shielding materials; training education and management, etc.

With the continuous increase in the number and types of electrical equipment and the continuous increase in operating frequency, the electromagnetic environment is becoming increasingly complex. At the same time, electronic devices and devices, especially semiconductor logic devices, are very sensitive to electromagnetic interference, and mutual interference between electronic devices often occurs. When electromagnetic interference occurs, it may cause degradation of the function of sensitive electronic equipment affected by the interference, or cause its function to fail, which may cause serious consequences.

The purpose of establishing EMC testing methods is to eliminate EMC problems inside the product and improve product quality; in product design, reduce the external electromagnetic interference of the product from the source; consider the anti-interference performance of the product in circuit design, and improve the electromagnetic environment adaptability of the product ability.

Electromagnetic interference and the anti-interference ability of electronic products are not only a pair of inseparable enemies, but also a contradictory unity related to each other. On the one hand, the increasing popularity of electronic products has made electromagnetic interference more and more serious; on the other hand, electromagnetic interference has put forward higher requirements for the design of electronic products. The core issue is how to ensure that electronic products (including electronic instruments and household appliances) can work normally and meet the design indicators in a complex electromagnetic environment.

The definition of electromagnetic compatibility by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is: "Electromagnetic compatibility is a function of electronic equipment that can perform its functions in an electromagnetic environment without generating intolerable interference." The electromagnetic environment mentioned here refers to the sum of all electromagnetic phenomena existing in a given place. This shows that electromagnetic compatibility has two meanings: first, electronic products should have the ability to suppress external electromagnetic interference; second, the electromagnetic interference generated by this electronic product should be below the limit, and must not affect the performance of other electronic devices in the same electromagnetic environment. normal work. Obviously, electromagnetic compatibility is more far-reaching than simply talking about anti-interference ability.
